It is with sadness and heartbreak that the Ruby family wishes to announce the sudden passing on March 3rd, 2019 of Eric Ruby, age 70, in Huntsville, Ont. Beloved son of Murray and Stella Ruby, brother to Michael, Paula (Martin), uncle to Stefan and Michaela and friend to many.

Eric was a passionate athlete his entire life. From the Huntsville mainstays of hockey where he played goal to lacrosse to skiing which took him to stints in Switzerland in the 70’s & western Canada. A ferocious tennis player, he confused opponents by hitting strokes with either his right or left hand. Some racquets were broken along the way. In later years Eric took to the pool enjoying swimming.

Eric spent many years working with his father Murray, at Ruby’s Men’s Wear. Where Eric brightened up the Main St. with his colourful sense of humor and boisterous commentary.

Eric had a wicked sense of humour and hi jinks and a “way” with words.

He was a thoughtful friend to many. Ever caring, keeping in touch and picking out the best cards for all occasions to the chuckles of all.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on May 11th at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Club Chalet at 11 a.m., lunch to follow.

He will be missed by family and friends from far and wide.

  1. Eric will definitely be missed.
    He’s the only person who would dare wear an entire outfit of plaid to a MacGregor family Christmas (from the store, no doubt), to prove to Dunc that he was one of us. Of course, we MacGregors knew that Eric had been family all along (same with the rest of the Rubys).
    He once joked that his dream when he lived on Main Street was to have a hot tub he could sit in and a megaphone so he could relax while still making sure his opinions were heard. A megaphone? For Eric Ruby?
    He had a booming, warm voice, a great sense of humour, an incredible curiousity, and one of the most caring of hearts. He’s unforgettable.

  2. My sincerest condolences to the Ruby family. I remember Eric to be so very kind — always willing to help anyone in need. When my mom was taking taxis, she was always so happy when Eric would come as he would always help her bring in her groceries. Bless his heart. May he rest in peace.

  3. What a lark Eric would have had browsing soooooo many find memories. I first met him on my initial taxi fare 22 years ago; a scared kid from rural Nova Scotia. Reciting me very risque poetry simply eased my fears. We have lost a true character, and a pillar of our heritage.

  4. My condolences to eric’s family. What an incredible person Eric was. I have so many memories of from over the years, but one sticks out. I was living in BC then, and was walking down the street in Jasper Alberta, and heard a voice bellowing my name! It was Eric, who I hadn’t seen in years, and he welcomed me to Jasper, which meant a beer and some food in a pub. He had just been skiing and it brought back memories of the long lineups at hidden valley ( they seemed long then!) and Eric was always entertaining everybody.

Times with Eric will never be forgotten, from dodging a falling tree that Eric had accidentally nudged while walking thru the woods to trying to convince him to climb down from a table at the Red Lion upon which he was enthusiastically dancing to Jumping Jack Flash. I am sure all who knew Eric will cherish the memories.

  7. Thanks for the laughs Eric, and the tennis matches, the jokes, the poems and the stories. Thanks for being a great coworker, thanks for sizing me up for the tuxedo I was married in. Thanks for your honesty and your unique take on life. Thanks for the smokes up in your apartment when Murray wasn’t looking! Thanks for your friendship. Hard to believe you are gone.

  8. Murray, Stella ,Mike and Paula I am so sorry to hear about Eric’s passing.
    I am sure it warms your hearts to see so many people taking the time to acknowledge his life and what he meant to them. As sad as this is , every time I think of Eric I either smile or laugh because that’s what he always made me do. I will never forget back in 1985 when I got the news about being accepted with York Regional Police, Eric was more excited than I was. Every time I was in town to visit my mom, somehow our paths would cross and he would want to hear my stories . I always felt Eric was walking the line between average and brilliant. The bottom line is he was a character, but more importantly a man with a big heart who really cared about the people he knew. My prayer will be that God gives you peace and strength as you grieve your loss.

  9. I reconnected with Eric at the store when my children were young. I was waiting for him to return from the bank and did not recognize him, even though I was patiently waiting. He took one look at me and said, “Janet Kennedy”! That was after not seeing me for 20 years! He disappeared and returned with our Kindergarten picture. I saw him again at the unveiling of Roy MacGregor’s hockey memorabilia, and also hugged Stella and Murray who had been neighbours of ours sixty years ago. They remembered my family and were very warm and gracious. I am so grateful I was able to see Eric recently. I am so sorry to hear of his sudden death. My prayers are with the family.

    We send our sincere, heartfelt condolences to Erics’ family and many friends.
    The day you died, Eric, is a sad day indeed for all who knew you.. Great memories go way back from hockey and lacrosse to the halls of Huntsville High! We knew you were an awesome skier, tennis and squash player. We didn’t know the Olympics were lurking on your doorstep! Other than your ski trip to Switzerland and travels in Europe, it is with rarety, you ever spoke of yourself. Our loss for sure!
    Working with your Dad and Gary at Rubys’ Men Wear you were amazing! Always putting a shirt and tie together, and/or a stylish suit to match that persons’ personality. Whether shopping, passing by, or across the street, a robust, jovial greeting would fill the air. Eric, if time allowed, always asking how his many friends in Dorset were doing. It was so disappointing when Murray retired and the store closed. Not only did we miss the store. We also greatly missed Eric.
    One day, as we entered the Hintsville mall, a smile covered our faces as, we heard Erics’ familiar, robust, greeting call out from actoss the mall. Eric was working in the malls’ Mens’ Wear! That was a wonderful day! Eric was not only, to the delight of many, back to his jovial antics in the mall. Eric was back helping his many friends dress their guys appropriately for whatever occasion they were about too attend
    Eric always smiling, seemingly happy, healthy and full of life. He will be sorely missed by all he met. Brent Munroe, Erics’ best friend, will be there to greet Eric , leading the procession that preceded him, as he enters into the next phase of his life.

He was one of the first people I met on Main St. and he was always full of passion and joie de viviré – I loved his poems and his ability to just go for it. He kept everyone on their toes. A true iconic citizen of Huntsville – he will be missed.

Though in the early day’s you scared me when you showed up at brunch at Hidden Valley my lord you could eat back then and you always came into the kitchen to say hello & Thank You.   16. In addition to being a genuinely humorous guy Eric was a very thoughtful and kind person. When my Mother died the first call I received was from Eric. Similarly when my husband died I received a card from Eric . On each occasion his words of condolence were sincere and compassionate.
    A wonderful soul full of joy and love for people. We were all blessed to have known him. My thoughts are with Stella , Murray , Mike ,Paula, and Mike’s children.

  21. Eric was a person who always grabbed your attention. There was never a dull moment when he was around. I’m really going to miss his back-handed, witty, insults! He saw Jimmy Hendrix 3 times;, one concert was on the Isle of Wright.
    He had so many friends who will not forget his humour and compassion. It was nice to have him nearby when I shot my mouth off! I was honoured to have him as a good friend.

  35. I am so sorry to hear of Eric’s death. What a huge personality. My time with Eric was back in the day skiing at the Valley. He was a unique guy and was always himself. He loved to laugh and had such a great smile. He had a few opinions too! To the whole family and of course my good friend Mike, Dean and I send our love and condolences.

    When visiting Huntsville,
    getting into mischief together. Striving to swim as well as him while at Rotary Beach. Sharing meals at our Grandma Rose’s apartment above the store. Joking around (with Gary, my uncle Murray and customers) when “working” together at Ruby’s Men’s (and Boy’s) Wear. Admiring his skiing skills and fearless lacrosse style. In our adult years Eric always offered an astute moral commentary on many issues and causes demonstrating deep thought and compassion.
    Our hearts are breaking, along with the rest of his family and friends.

  38. I was blessed to have known Eric for almost 50 years, meeting him through “the Europe Gang”. He had the biggest heart and wrote amazing poetry, and definitely added excitement and colour to every gathering. Murray and Stella….you raised a truly wonderful man, and he so loved you, Paula, Michael and the boys. We will all miss him.

  39. Who doesn’t remember Ruby’s Men’s and Boys Wear? One could find any good quality respectable and fashionable need for the men in your life. But the best part was being greeted by Eric and engaging in always interesting conversation with perhaps a treat of his most recent poem. You always came away with more! It was a feel good destination. They were wonderful days and wonderful memories and we are so lucky to have them.

  40. I am so sorry to hear about Eric. I would see him every day when I had to walk past the store to go home from High School. If he wasn’t busy he would come outside or open the door to say hello and if he was with a customer he would nod and smile his big ‘ole smile. He would always make me laugh. Later on I spent a little time with him when Shelly, Donna and Jill all hung around together at Deerhurst. My love goes out to the Ruby family. There will now always be an Eric size hole in the heart of Huntsville.

  44. It is with sadness when I heard of Eric’s passing. Eric was a joy to know and a very loyal associate to Hampton Lane men’s wear. Eric always shared stories with us about the town and all his friends. I remember like yesterday the cover of a ski magazine he proudly shared with me featuring his sister on the front cover.

I recall in years past how he always bragged about being Eddie Shack’s cousin and quoting his, “Take care of the nickels and the dimes will take care of themselves.” In later years Eric always dressed my husband and boys for every special occasion.   66. I am so sorry to hear this news. After being out of town for 20 years I saw Murray at Edmonds Chev Olds about 2 months ago and asked about Eric. He told me where he was living and it is still in my phone to look him up. Again I am sorry at his passing and hope this reminds us all how important it is to look up friends when we think about it and not put it off till tomorrow. The memories are too numerous to mention them all; from hitting tennis balls at Marry at the net, to his bragging to me about his picture in drag, to multiple Blue Jay games including the 1992 World Series together, you never knew what he was going to say or who he was going to loudly direct it to. No matter the result we always laughed about it later. We will all remember him with a smile and a warm feeling in our hearts. He will be missed by us all.

  81. I’m deeply saddened to hear of the loss of my friend Eric. Eric had a huge heart and an amazing sense of humour. Eric would be happy to be remembered as having a great sense of humour and more than a little outrageous. His appetite for life was closely rivalled for his appetite for good food. Somewhere I have a picture of Eric, Jill, Donna and I on New Years Eve where Eric is wearing a tuxedo and an eye patch for fashion purposes only.   99. So sorry to lean of Eric’s passing. We are now living in Moncton NB and are wintering down on Jekyll Island GA but will be heading back in late April via Huntsville. I remember Eric fondly, playing tennis or just sharing a joke or two on Main Street. He will be missed by many. All my love to both of you.
